Delores Hildago

It was November 1 and we were off to Delores Hildago for a two-night stay. This would be the location we would experience Dia de Muertos for the first time.

First, we had to get back through the Tunel de Ogarrio and the 28kms of cobblestone road back to the highway.

When we reached the highway, we pulled over to check the bikes over for any missing or loose parts, and put our GPS’s back on their holders. Francis did find one bolt was missing from his luggage carrier. He “borrowed” one from the other side of the bike until we came across an auto parts store.

We pulled into Santa Maria for a rest break and snacks. The community and Center Square were decorated for Dia de Muertos and very festive.

Experiencing Dia de Muertos

We arrived at Delores Hildago without reservations at a hotel. We made it to the central square, parked, and the guys went looking for a hotel. In the meantime, I stayed with the bikes. Then I was approached by security to move the bikes. After explaining numerous times that I am not able to move all the bikes, nor call the guys, they showed up with a hotel selected. We were booked in at Hotel Hidalgo. It turned out to be a great hotel. Two blocks from the central square and secure parking for the bikes a block away.

The festivities of Dia de Muertos did not disappoint that evening. There were displays of families honoring passed loved ones set up along one side of the square. Food vendors were offering everything from tacos, to churros, to ice cream, to gorditas. There were vendors selling memorabilia and souvenirs. And along one side of the square were carnival rides for the kids. A band performed Mexican music on a huge stage in front of the cathedral. It was an amazing, memorable experience.

Day Two

The festivities continued the next day. We were going to view a couple of the museums, but they were closed for the holiday. We took a day off from riding to continue exploring Delores Hidalgo, its history, and experience day two of Dia de Muertos .

Next…back on the road to one of two destinations…
