Tequila!!
On our way through to Guayabitos, we stopped in Tequila for a rest break and snacks. It was on a weekend and was incredibly busy and crowded. It was definitely a place that needed to be revisited on a quieter weekday, and for a couple of days.
The hotel we booked in at was Casa Jima Agave. Location was a bit farther from the Central Square than we typically like, but it was walking distance. Secure parking is available at the back of the building. Rooms are comfortable and have everything you need.
Tequila Museum
There are numerous attractions and sights to check out related to the production of tequila in the area. One place to add to your list of things to do, is the National Museum of Tequila.
Following a maze of rooms you walk through, it tells the story of the history of tequlia. Also, the process from growing the agave plants, to the distillation, and distribution. The displays are impressive, and the artwork stunning.
Jose Cuervo Distillery
Another attraction to take a walk through, is the Jose Cuervo Distillery. There are mini information sessions on site. Or you can sign up for tours for a more in depth learning experience. Of course there is a bar on site where you can sample the Jose Cuervo tequila in a variety of beverages.
The Danza de los Voladores
We were exploring the two main Squares in Centro Tequila when we heard the soft sound of a song being played on a flute. Then a drum beat started. There were four men dressed in traditional attire starting to climb a pole set up in the Square. These were the Danza de los Voladores, or The Dance of the Flyers.
The Voladores are tied to a rope which is wrapped around the top of the pole. The dancers launch themselves backwards off the top as the platform is spinning. They continue to spin around the pole as the rope unwinds and they slowly descend to the ground.
Very spectacular and scary at the same time!! I would never be brave enough to climb that pole, never mind spinning around as you are dropped to the ground.
Next destination another place we wanted to revisit in more depth…
