Jiquilipan de Juarez

I still wasn’t feeling great, and was weak from being sick, but it was time to pack up and head out to a new location. Next on the list was Jiquilipan de Juarez.

The navigation wanted us to go the shorter route to the east. We chose to go the other way around Lake Chapala on highway 23, then highway 15. Turned out to be a very nice ride.

We selected Hotel Palmira to stay at. It was very close to the City Squares, walking distance to many attractions to visit, and restaurant on site. Bonus points being able to ride the bikes right into the beautiful courtyard in a more secure location. What a jackpot on booking this hotel!!

After a brief walk in the area on arrival day, we decided to book a third night to allow enough time to explore everything we wanted to.

The Markets

Jiquilipan definitely had the longest Street Market we had come across yet. It went on for blocks and blocks on both sides. Selection included everything from food, to kitchen wares, leatherworks, to yard ornaments. It was very impressive!

Sites To Explore

I had researched attractions and sites to explore in Jiquilipan. There were museums, art galleries, murals, historic homes, and La Casita de Piedra. Planned the exploring over the two days, but sadly most of the attractions were not open. Nor could I find out the reason. Good ol’ internet said they should have been open. The only two open were the murals and La Casita de Piedra.

La Casita de Piedra

La Casita de Piedra, which translates to The Stone House, shows displays of the silk worm farming process. Staff explain the steps for cultivating and processing of the cocoons, to the process of weaving the fibers into beautiful products. They turn the silk into everything from clothing, to tablecloths, to even jewelry.

I recommend Jaquilpan de Juarez as a must see destination if in the area. And even better if you can book in at Hotel Palmira.
