Exploring Downtown Winthrop
Day 4 was another non-ride day to explore downtown Winthrop. After a bit of a sleep in and a light breakfast of oatmeal, we got ready to go explore the downtown core. It was going to be another scorcher. So it was best to walk the downtown in the morning, and hide in the shade at the campsite in the afternoon.
The downtown core has the main attraction stores on one long street lining each side of the street. Sidewalks are wooden, so attention needs to be paid when walking.
We checked out most stores to see what they had to offer. There was everything from outdoor stores, to candy and ice cream, to bakeries.
We both bought a few items along the way. I found the perfect Cascade Loop sticker to add to Rebel’s side panel.
We spent the afternoon at the campsite relaxing in the shade and trying to stay as cool as possible, and drink as much water as possible.
Dinner was going to be a treat at The Old Schoolhouse Brewery…except they are closed on Tuesday’s?? So we stopped in at Three Fingered Jack’s Saloon instead.
Apocalypse?
When we arrived in Winthrop, there were rumour’s that we would not be able to ride highway 20 west, the Cascades. The highway had been closed due to fire and debris rolling onto the road surface.
When we emerged from Three Finger Jack’s about an hour later, it looked like an apocalypse. The wind had shifted and picked up, blowing the smoke right into Winthrop. Very intense!
After an ice cream treat for dessert, and to cool down, we headed back to the campground. And I started looking for another route option home.
