Days 4 & 5 – Stewart, BC
Cooked up a full breakfast of bacon and eggs before packing up and hitting the road for Stewart……have to admit don’t always have the supplies to do that when traveling on the bikes. The highway became a bit less boring with some twists and turns. Not seeing many motorcyclists in this stretch though.
Discovered Stewart to be a quaint, small community. We camped at the Rainy Creek Campground which was on the edge of town. Clean facilities, friendly staff, and cheap firewood.
Today we planned to venture up to the Salmon Glacier. Interesting as you need to dip briefly into Alaska, going through Hyder, Alaska, and then back into British Columbia to get to the glacier. We discovered that Hyder is literally right around the corner from Stewart. Once the pavement ended after Hyder, the road was a very rough, dusty, bumpy gravel/dirt road. The views were spectacular though….so rugged, so remote. Standing overlooking Salmon Glacier was a spiritual moment……so quiet, peaceful, nothing like we had seen before. Visitors are not allowed to walk out on the glacier, but you could still make out the roughness and crevasses. A volunteer at the lookout said the crevasses can get as deep as 90 feet. The breathtaking views, the colors, the remoteness are definitely worth the drive.
On the way back to Stewart, we stopped at a viewpoint at Fish Creek to see the salmon spawning. There is a small fee to get in to walk the boardwalks that run along and above the creek. And the boardwalks are there to try to keep the humans and bears separated, and preserve the area. There were not any bears in the area when we stopped in. A volunteer Ranger was there explaining the life cycle of the salmon and pointing out and explaining their behaviors. It was a very interesting, informative learning experience.
